This past Tuesday night was a double whammy. Not only did I give Husbie the best 25th birthday gift ever, I also crossed #16 off of my 30 before 30 list!
Husbie is the cook in our household and we’ve often chatted about taking a cooking class together (since my skills in the kitchen are hardly what you would call adequate). Earlier this year my bestie J told me about a rave review from a mutual friend regarding her experience with Get Cooking here in Edmonton. Kathryn Joel, a local chef that originally trained in London at Le Cordon Bleu, is the founder of Get Cooking and offers private cooking lessons for groups of people anywhere from one to twelve people. The fun part of the whole thing is that you can choose any cuisine or theme and she’ll create a menu using local ingredients with wine pairings to match! You also get to go home with recipes! It was definitely the perfect gift idea for Husbie’s birthday.
After emailing Kathryn and securing a date, I decided on a theme of making pasta from scratch which Husbie has wanted to learn for a long time. Then I patiently waited until Kathryn sent me a menu:
- Fresh Tagliarini with Pesto Sauce
- Ricotta Gnocchi with Cherry Tomatoes
- Butternut Squash Tortellini with Parsley & Walnut sauce
- Fresh Papardelle with Duck Ragu
- Strawberries with Balsamic Vinegar
Um…YUM!! I was so excited, I could hardly keep it a secret. Husbie insisted on remaining oblivious to the details of what was going on until the night before, which was extremely difficult for me and my big mouth, but I did it!
We were joined by 4 close friends and arrived at Kathryn’s private home at 6pm (which is conveniently about 10 minutes away from our place…bonus!) and were welcomed at the door by Kathryn’s assistant, Michelle. Both Kathryn and Michelle were warm and friendly and immediately put us all at ease. With our aprons on and a glass of wine to start, we dove right in. Making pasta from scratch ended up being pretty easy, a lot of fun and SO delicious!
Thanks to Kathryn and Michelle for a wonderful evening of learning and EATING! We enjoyed every moment and will definitely be taking more of your classes in the future.
